2012 Generative Artist Award Winners on KCUR

By Steve Walker for KCUR
"Since 2008, the Charlotte Street Foundation has
recognized creative Kansas Citians who, within their various genres,
consistently produce original and innovative work that often falls
outside the mainstream.
Selected for this year's
Generative Performing Artist Awards are composer and musician Patrick
Conway and theater artist Heidi Van.
Receiving an honor like the Charlotte Street Foundation's Generative Performing Artist
Award can prompt honorees to think about their work – where it’s been
and where it’s going. Conway and Van take the opportunity to describe
themselves as artists lest anyone else do it for them."

DANDELION CHAINS
In her one-woman show Dandelion Chains, playwright and actor Shanna Shrum performs the roles of six characters whose lives intersect as two men struggle to maintain custody of their adopted daughter, Ella. It examines deeper issues of redefining “normal” and “family,” inherited familial and societal values, and domestic abuse. Dandelion Chains asks, what can we do to assure a better life for our children, no matter how painful it may be for ourselves? Can we achieve redemption from our pasts? Read the full review here!

by Phil Blue Owl Hooser
June 1 - 4
It is funny, inspiring, quick,
witty and there is only one weekend to see not the movie The Women, but a
stunning recreation/tribute by Philip “Blue Owl” Hooser. Not seen since
its Late Night Theatre premiere in 2004, this one-man show (with a
whole lot of lady parts) will resurface at the Fishtank Performance
Studio.
Hooser portrays nearly 100 characters, all women, with the help of
quite a few hats. … The story revolves around New York City’s 1
percent, as gossip ruins the marriage of Mary Haines with a little help
from her frenemy Sylvia Fowler and, of course, Crystal Allen, the girl
behind the perfume counter who has her hooks in Mary’s husband.
It’s your gay aunt’s Jungle Red -- not the pitiful remake. Known
for dialogue that drips with venom, this movie is a significant piece of
gay history and Hollywood gossip -- all of which will be revealed, from
the feuds to the injury, from the Lavender Mafia to the uncredited
screen debut! So, if you can’t see the Spiderman musical, you still
might see an actor die on stage.
Performances will be at 8 p.m. June 1-4 at the Fishtank Performance Studio, 1715 Wyandotte St., Kansas City, Mo. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. To pre-purchase the $12 tickets, visit: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/250176
