#FRINGETANK2K14 takes new plays developed at the Fishtank to the Hearland Forum

THESE FISH ARE MOVING TO A BIGGER TANK

Heidi Van & The Fishtank present three FRINGE Plays developed over a five-month PLAYWRIGHT’S SEMINAR: CONCEPT TO CONCERT

Developing new works from concept to concert has been the mission of the Fishtank Performance Studio since its founding in 2009. This year’s Fringe Festival takes new plays developed at the Fishtank to the HEARTLAND FORUM.

“RED FISH,” “GREEN FISH,” and “BLUE FISH” are collections of short plays written during the Fishtank’s Spring Playwriting Seminar facilitated by curator Heidi Van and directed by Bryan Moses.  “I believe everyone has at least one play in them. I believe everyone is capable of writing that play,” say Moses. “What we hope to provide for aspiring playwrights is the realization of their vision through the collaborative nature of theatre. To let them experience first hand how directors, actors, designers, producers, and audiences can empower and shape their work.”

“I really saw the Fishtank playwriting seminar as the perfect opportunity… Knowing that there was a full Fringe production waiting at the end was not just a bonus, but something essential: a deadline. I knew I was going to write a new play,” says featured playwright and seminar participant Victor Wishna.

“This project turned from big to bigger to huge!” says Fishtank curator and Fringe producer Heidi Van. “Bryan and I were hoping for one class of six playwright participants in our seminar, we had cap our enrollment at 16 playwrights and three classes. Then we realized that meant three Fringe shows, three Fringe cast, sets, it just snowballed into the Fishtank’s own mini festival of new short plays with in the Fringe.”

Each class was identified by a fish color, RED FISH, BLUE FISH, or GREEN FISH. “We decided to keep those as the title of the plays,” says Van. “We also decided moving our shows to a bigger venue would be beneficial to the playwrights so their ideas weren’t limited to one particular space. The just had the freedom to write.”

“I am grateful to Bryan Moses and Heidi Van for providing the vehicle for new plays to ‘birth,’ and giving playwrights and actors the opportunity to grow in their craft!” says actress Nancy Marcy who appears in a number of the new pieces.
