Peter Lawless | Ad Hoc Music Series

Peter Lawless composes/arranges/plays music. He graduated in 2008 with a bachelors degree in composition from the University of Missouri Kansas City. Peter's musical tastes are diverse, and his big ears are evident in his work. His interests run the gamut of jazz, rock, electronic and classical genres, but his passions lie in the chimeric intersections of these styles.

Peter plays saxophone, bass, electronics and variety of other instruments with Kansas City area groups, including the The B'Dinas, The Blackhouse Improvisors Collective, Bad Rebels (musical improv comedy and BOOM! An International Lost & Found Family Marching Band. His music has been performed and recorded by the People's Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City. He has also worked as a freelance composer/arranger for movies, theater, dance, educational organizations, and community ensembles.

Peter is an artist resident of the Fishtank Performance Studio, where he curates the Ad Hoc Music Series.

Started in January 2010, the Fishtank's Ad Hoc Music Series presents unique, innovative, and multi-dimensional musical performances from local Kansas City musicians and composers.

Vol. 7: Words & Music - the music of Kevin Hiatt - July 16, 2010 - 8:30pm

World music influenced chamber music meets the spoken word. This concert will present world and KC area premieres of works for oboe and percussion, violin and guitar, and poetry by Kevin Hiatt. Kevin will also perform acoustic solo works on 6, 7, 12 string and baritone guitars.

A night of ambient and electronic music featuring the star of the first Ad Hoc performance: Andrew Weathers. This time Andrew brought along his ensemble featuring cello and saxophone.
The show also featured N. Nomurai from St. Louis and Matt Dill from Kansas City.

Vol. 5: Free Improvisation Night - May 24, 2010 - 8pm

This Ad Hoc Music special event will feature musicians from Kansas City and Louisville playing new compositions composed on the spot. The invited guests will take part in a series of improvisations, seeking to unite players of diverse backgrounds and form a unique musical language.

Audience members are encouraged to bring instruments and participate in the music making!

Vol. 4: The Diverse Composition Project - May 7, 2010 - 8pm

What happens when you combine one of the most talented jazz groups in the country with some the most innovative student composers in the midwest?

The Diverse Composition Project seeks to find out. The project strives for the eclectic.

This First Friday event will feature a concert by Kansas City-based jazz quintet Diverse performing a mixed set of their own original works and those of UMKC student composers. Expect a night of inventive music combining jazz, improvisation and contemporary compositon.

The Premise

• I, Peter Lawless, agree to take the following actions during the month of January 2010 (Friday, January 1 – Sunday, January 31):

• I will spend two (2) hours each day in the front window of the Fishtank Performance studio (1715 Wyandotte Rd., Kansas City, MO 64108).

• During this time I will compose music.

• When a page is filled, I will tape it to the window with intention of covering the window completely by the end of the month.

• I will log my progress with daily blog posts at http://writingmusictofillawindow.blogspot.com

• At the end of the month, I will rehearse the music with performers, and a concert will be given at the Fishtank during the first week of February 2010.
